Discussing Stress with an Expert!

Every speaker at the Neuroleadership Summit in San Francisco earlier this month shared some incredible insights and fascinating science – a personal highlight for me was hearing Jessica Payne speak about the neuroscience of Stress, Sleep, Memory and Cognition.

I thought her tips were especially important and very practical – so we had a chat in front of the camera to share some of the gold with you… nevermind that I was slightly jet-lagged! I certainly understood the value of her comments. I’m sure many of you know that long-term chronic stress was my undoing about 9 years ago, and it’s been a long road to recovering my health – especially brain health.

Many people I talk to are under too much stress, for too long, and changes need to be made before your body makes a serious change for you. As Jessica says, moderate stress is ok, but would you describe your stress as moderate and useful, or unhealthy? Does it keep you awake at night? Does it affect your clarity of thinking? Your general wellbeing or relationships?

Here’s some simple tips to help – enjoy the video and find a small change you can make to support your best asset – your brain.

Beyond the Mind Body Problem – Dr Jeffery M Schwartz

Kerrie Phipps and Dr Jeffrey Schwarz

This picture was taken when I met Dr Schwarz at the first NeuroLeadership Summit in Sydney a couple of years ago.

In this video Dr Jeffrey Schwatrz discusses at the United Nations how focused attention can change the brain…and this is why I’m so passionate about coaching people to the outcomes they dream of.

I was reminded of an article I wrote a few years ago about a clients experience – it’s a useful peek into what’s possible… read it here..

“I need to rewire my brain…” a client told me recently. This motivated professional defined the essence of coaching accurately. In three months she’s completely changed her focus in several key areas of her thinking, so that she’s no longer traveling down the highway of negative thinking and reacting badly, but choosing an empowering, positive focus.

By paying attention to her goals, she literally has created new wiring, or neural pathways in her brain. With deliberate thinking and actions, she has created new habits which support her continued success.

You can literally rewire your brain to create sustainable success by paying attention to your goal, or desired outcome. While we are keeping focused on the goal, there’s no room for negative thinking or discouragement; the brain is in an energized state with an increase in the feel-good chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. More possibilities arise and insights flow as the brain makes more connections. When we pay attention to the insight we are strengthening those networks in the brain – basically, the brain gets used to the insight and when enough attention has been paid to the insight it becomes the natural way of thinking.

6 recent discoveries about the brain… adapted from Quiet Leadership by David Rock.

  1. The brain is a connection machine.  Every thought we have is not contained in one key area, but is a map created across different areas of the brain. The connections or information the brain considers important become hardwired, anything else is lost.
  2. Up close, no two brains are alike.  The implications of this are enormous. Just to consider one aspect is to realize that we can’t expect someone else to see a situation exactly as we do.
  3. The brain hardwires everything it can.  Broadly speaking, there are two parts of the brain: working memory and long term memory. The brain works hard to get things out of short-term memory and into long-term memory – it uses less resources that way.
  4. Our hardwiring drives our perception.  We see what we’ve conditioned our brains to see. “We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are” ~ Anais Nin, (1903-1977),
  5. It’s practically impossible to deconstruct our wiring.  Anything we give focus to can become hardwired. Therefore, the more we focus on an area, the more we deepen that connection.
  6. It’s easy to create new wiring.  This is the good news, and it’s what the brain was designed to do. Therefore the old hardwiring becomes obsolete as the new wiring can become the dominant wiring – if you give it more attention.

The implications of these discoveries by neuroscientists over the past 15 years are enormous. What do they mean for you – for your own thinking and the way you have conversations with others?

Wayne Pearce

Wayne Pearce,  footy legend, motivational speaker and coach was speaking at an event Lyndon and I attended last night – and it was a delight to hear him speak.  I’m  always so happy to hear from professional sports people as they exemplify focus, commitment and countless other  inspiring and admirable qualities.

He discussed the brains incredible plasticity and how we can rewire our brains – just one of my absolute favourite topics!  He also inspired and challenged leaders and business owners to give people a sense of belonging and bring a sense of meaning to what they do, which is so important for everyone, regardless of their role.

Brings to mind what David Rock was teaching us at Results Coaching Systems Leadership Day a few months ago.  The brain needs certainty, a sense of status, autonomy, relatedness and fairness in order to be in an optimal thinking space…  just one of the fascintating things about the brain that we can take into account when coaching!

Wayne also kindly autographed a note to our son Ethan which totally made his day.

Thanks for coming to Dubbo Wayne!

Inspiration and Excitement

Inspiration and excitement is surrounding me this week, so it’s a quick catch up here to keep you in the loop. I’ve just completed an amazing coaching series with a long distance client who has successfully rewired her brain – her definition of the process, and an accurate one. She’s completely changed her focus in a specific area of her thinking, so that she’s no longer traveling down the highway of negative thinking and reacting badly, but choosing an empowering, positive focus. She literally has created new wiring in her brain – as we all do when we create new habits. There’s so much learning in there I will write more soon. Here’s a brilliant, easy to understand article I came across this week if you want to delve more into the fascinating science of thinking – The Brain at Work, By Adrienne Fox.

My brother Greg and his beautiful wife Nicole, welcomed their baby Mikayla Joy into the world this morning, Sister to Matthew and Cousin, Niece, Granddaughter to the rest of the family – we all love her immediately! Congratulations! Lots of excitement!

Yesterday I spoke at a State Conference on how change can bring positive outcomes – inspiring stuff… as I mentioned in my previous blog, it’s when the door slams shut in our face (and we stop crying and look around) we see the gorgeous French doors (more opportunities, often better ones) that we would have missed otherwise. We choose how long we stand around crying for!! We choose our focus. To say “I can’t help feeling angry” is not entirely correct. Your thinking is keeping you there, so in a way you can’t help feeling that – because it’s in line with your thinking – but you can choose what you think about! Take charge of your brain!! What do you need to focus on to move forward?

I can’t help feeling excited – but I must confess it’s because of my thinking! I’m thinking about ideas and inspiring stuff and believing the best days are ahead of me – why worry about things I can’t change? One thing I can always change is my attitude.

Viktor Frankl said it so well… “The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”

Have a great week – look for the inspiration and excitement!

Cheering you on, Kerrie
