I know life is full of challenges. But it’s also full of joys. Uplifting moments, the bounce in the step, the feeling of gratitude, even if things aren’t going well. It’s not a circumstantial thing, it’s a focus thing. I’m sure I’ve asked this before – where is your focus right now?
Joy is available to us everyday – but it doesn’t come looking for us, we need to look for it, and generate it.
Discovering Joy in the everyday. It’s SO possible, even in a crazy busy world.
I remember the first time I saw Jamie Oliver on TV, throwing together a salad, passionately discussing it. He made this comment “Fresh mint in a salad is just a joy” and I thought “Oh Jamie, you’re just a JOY.” I became a fan immediately.
I was inspired by Jamie’s way of seeing the world and I love that his work is what he absolutely delights in. That doesn’t mean that everything in his life is fabulous; I’m sure he has challenges just like every body else. We all have challenges but we can find what we are passionate about and we can discover joys that aren’t always obvious.
So this is an invitation to go discover the joy in your every day. What are the little things that light you up? Maybe it’s the trees or the clouds or the brilliant blue of the sky. Maybe it’s the smell of coffee or strawberries. Yum! There is something in the everyday that you can find joy in. And one of the best ways to change your state or perspective in order to find the joy is noticing things you can be grateful for.
It’s ok if its just a choice at the moment and you don’t feel joyful but you choose to notice it and put pen to paper. List (or draw) what you are grateful for, like living somewhere that has air conditioning, grateful for a roof over your head – really – imagine if you didn’t! You will start to find more and more things to be grateful for and you will start to see more of those things appearing in your life.
Last week I posted a ‘good morning’ kind of comment on facebook, quite early as I was getting ready for a 7am breakfast. I had a giggle to myself as I imagined that some people might see it and say “Ugh! I hate morning people!” – I wanted to go back and add “I’m not a morning person!” I’m totally not, it takes me a while to get going, but I don’t get out of bed til I’ve written at least one thing, (usually 3 things) that I’m grateful and I CHOOSE to get up and have a great day. Playing an uplifting song is the next thing I do. I need help to choose my focus many times. And I discover Joy in everyday life.
How can you generate joy, or find joy in the little things today?
Comments are welcome! You might just inspire someone (including me and YOU) :-)
Cheering you on,
Kerrie
